Feature for March 2010

Western Riding UK have written sections on bitting before but we have received a number of requests for information regarding bitting of the western horse. In cases when you are just hacking or training you can use which ever bit your horse is happy with. Remember it is not just the snaffle hanging up, some horses do not like snaffles so some experimentation is required. Make sure you have the right size, make sure the bit is correctly fitted and make sure you understand why you are using the chosen bit and what the aim of using that bit are.

If your horse is not happy with his bit he will soon let you know. Ears back, resisting commands, not listening? Any of these familiar?

We receive numerous horses for and sometimes it is not the horse but the bit they have been ridden in that is causing the problem. Sometimes the simplest of change can make all the difference and be the cheapest option.

Some of the best bits we have used are the Myler Bits and it has come to our attention that Dale Myler one of the famous Myler brothers is visiting the UK in March. As well as teh public demo, Dale will be running a series of bitting days around the country. Dale has over 25 years experience in bitting and is an expert loriner.

This is a rare and valuable opportunity to learn more about bitting in general as well as the Myler system in particular. Dale will even welcome your horse ro just come to watch.

The bitting demo is being held on Friday 12 March at Patchetts, Mr Watford from 7pm and will cost £20. Visit www.belstane.com for more information.
